The water bodies in Kerala are getting polluted everyday due to sewage disposal and also the lack of concern for the upkeep of the water bodies. About 2,50,000 gallons of sewage water is discharged into the rivers and streams from Cochin City everyday. The pH value of water was found to be 8.45 in Cochin, the dissolved oxygen (DO) is 9.4, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) is 1.6 and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is 28.0. This shows a high level of pollution in the water taken up for treatment and distributed to various parts of the city.
Drinking water with high fecal coliform count leads to pathogenic diseases, like typhoid, viral and bacteriological gastro-enteritis, ear infection and Hepatitis A. Maximum concentration of coliforms makes water undrinkable. Coliforms are counted per 100 ml. The most Probable Number (MPN) of coliforms in the water bodies in Alwaye is 300/100 ml. When the coliform count goes above 24,00,000 per 100 ml of water that water is termed as undrinkable and harmful for human health.
Due to the continuing boom in Real Estate Kerala state as a whole is witnessing the domination of the market forces. And, it is these forces that decide the final price of a property in a prime locality. A trend that began in the city of Cochin and which has now spread to almost all parts of the state of Kerala is the phenomenal rise in property values and the competition between the prominent realtors to own land in the prime destinations. It has resulted in the unplanned, environmentally harmful real estate developments.
The high coliform count in the water bodies adjacent to Cochin City and elsewhere in Kerala is attributed to the continuous filling up of wetlands and other inland water bodies. No government has so far succeeded in reversing this trend. If the present trend involving a callous attitude towards the biodiversity of the state and also the unique environment is to continue, in the near future this state will have to pay a heavy price. The best way out is to change the present outlook and attitude of the present younger generation towards the pressing environmental issues. By disseminating the necessary information among the youth and the younger generation through proper media, major changes can be expected.
